Simul Studio

A Dazz Cam alternative for iPhone and Android

Dazz Cam is one of the most popular retro camera apps on iPhone. If you're on Android, want film stocks rather than camera bodies, or would rather pay once, here's how Simul Studio compares.

The official Dazz Cam (by DAZZ PTE. LTD.) is on the App Store but has no official Google Play listing we could find, so Dazz-named apps on Android are made by other developers. Simul Studio is on both, focuses on film stocks with a full darkroom editor, and unlocks with one payment.

Cameras vs film stocks

Dazz Cam is built around imitating specific cameras: you pick a body, and its look, frame and quirks come with it. That's a great way to play, and it covers video too.

Simul Studio is built around film stocks instead. You pick a look based on a film like Kodak Portra 400 or Ilford HP5, see it live in the camera, then fine-tune it in a darkroom editor, or apply it to photos you've already taken. Your original is always kept.

Dazz Cam on Android

We couldn't find an official Android version of Dazz Cam from its developer. Google Play has several apps with Dazz in the name from other developers, so check who makes an app before you install it. Simul Studio is on Google Play from the same developer as the iPhone app, and the one-time unlock works the same way on both.
